Baba Dudu: The Man in the Dark

Baba Dudu: The Man in the Dark

I have heard stories of evil creatures attacking students in the night, but I haven’t experienced it myself, I don’t know if they are real, they may be myths and they may be true, but my friend Kelvin on the other hand doesn’t believe they exist, his mother told him they were fictitious stories.
” Ojonugwa, even if they exist, I am covered by the blood of Jesus, nothing can happen to me, ” he said.
His father was a pastor at Deeper Life Church, so he believed he had the mandate to crush Satan and his agents, that includes Baba Dudu of course.

Federal Government College Ibaji is located in a thick forest, it was formally a burial ground before the government turned it into a school. Every generation has its own story of witches and wizards in that school. My sisters have told me stories of that school, even though they didn’t experience it themselves.
” Ojonugwa! Ojonugwa! Wake up, it’s me Kelvin please follow me to the toilet, “
” Ahn Ahn shebi you said you are covered by the blood of Jesus? why are you afraid to go out by yourself, abi the blood is no longer there?”
” Stop saying rubbish. I just need company. “
” If you need company, call your fellow prayer warrior, the hostel prefect to follow you.”
” Please now.”
” Alright, let us go.”

I was afraid of the chances of seeing Baba Dudu, we call him Baba Dudu because he is a dark man who only comes out in the darkness― Baba Dudu is afraid of the light, he never comes out during the daytime. The type of toilet we had in school was a pit toilet, it was littered with paper, sometimes, when students were out of tissue they used those paper to clean themselves up after they are done with their business. It wasn’t up to five minutes we got there, I saw Baba Dudu from Afar, I flashed to see if it was him, he used his hands to cover his face, he wore tattered clothes, there was local charm normally called Jazz dangling around his waist, it was a stick wrapped in red and white clothing.
” Ha! Ha! Ha! “
He was laughing hysterically. He started running towards us.
” Kelvin, Baba Dudu run! “

With a clean pair of heels, we disappeared from the toilet. Baba Dudu chased us to our hostel. At the entrance to the hostel, Kelvin slipped and fell, I didn’t even bother helping him, I dashed to my bed and closed my eyes.
” Baba Dudu! Somebody help me, Baba Dudu wants to harm me, ” Kelvin said.
I could hear people shaking on their beds―many persons were awake but nobody could muster the courage to confront Baba Dudu.
We just heard screams. His voice faded gradually after each scream.
” What are you doing? Please stop! Mummy mo.

At my school when you shout, ” help!” nobody will answer you, but when you shout, ” Run for your life!” Then you will see people reacting, I was shocked Kelvin didn’t know this― me I knew this, but if I shout now, Baba Dudu might beat Kelvin and me together.
” Satan you are a small boy. Run from here in the mighty name of Jesus, “
It was the hostel prefect, Senior Thankgod, he got up from his bed and started praying― he was heading towards Kelvin and Baba Dudu.
” Holy Ghost fire! I send you back to the pit of hell.”
Tawai!
Baba Dudu slapped senior Thankgod.
” Chineke mo! I cover myself with the blood of Jesus.”
He! He! He!
Baba Dudu was still laughing.
I couldn’t hear Senior Thankgod’s Voice again.
My heart was beating too fast.
Gbim! Gbim!
I didn’t know when I slept off, the next morning Senior Thankgod and Kelvin’s bodies were filled with injuries, they were peeling off―they were taken home for prayers. since that day I saw Baba Dudu, I never go to the toilet at night again, I just fold my towel and do my business on it, then I will wash it in the morning.

  1. I didn’t take a break till I got to the last word. Why’s that so? Maybe my expectations. Or it’s just the magic in the flow of narration.
